Day 6 - Black Pudding and bringing home the bacon!

A foodie friend runs a lovely blog - Is life a recipe? This morning his blog mentioned something called Black Pudding. It intrigued me and I looked it up on the web.

The Black pudding is a sausage made of blood and oatmeal dates back to 800 BC and has been mentioned in Homer's Odyssey! It is meant to be an essential part of English breakfast.

As I explored the website .. I learnt about the phrase 'bring home the bacon'. I had always thought that the phrase implied bringing home the money, when actually it was to do with marital harmony in 12th century England! The Church in Dunmow town promised a side of bacon to any married man who could take oath in front of the congregation that he had not fought with his wife for 12 whole months and a day! The bacon was a mark of the man being very tolerant, patient and basically a good man with self-control! Hmmmm..... not sure Micky'd ever bring it home were we in Dunmow and am sure glad for our modern day lives, Cold Storage and our salaries! :)

Of course, the term later evolved into bringing home the money.

Now that makes sense! :)
